When you start decorating your home for the holidays, you may get caught up in the holiday spirit and forget to put safety as a priority. However, the numbers of homeowner’s insurance claims around the holidays are quite high. According to a report completed by Allstate, about 67,500 homeowners insurance claims are made during the holidays. Here are some tips to help keep your home safe from harm this winter and always:
- Whether you have a real or artificial tree in your home, remember to keep it away from heat sources like candles, heaters, fireplaces, and stoves. Fire claims are increased by about 15% during the holiday months.
- If your tree is real, keep it watered by checking it daily and refilling the reservoir. There are also several techniques that are claimed to help with absorption: a crushed aspirin in the water, bleach in the water, even making a criss-cross cut into the bottom of the tree trunk are supposed to work. Just remember to be mindful of curious pets or children who may come in contact with the water.
- Holiday candles can make your home feel warm and smell comfortable. Just remember to always extinguish them before you leave the room or go to bed at night. Do not place them near drafty areas or anything flammable. Keeping them at least three feet from any other objects can help.
- Make sure you have a partner to help you hang those outside lights. Have someone hold the ladder, and never go up if it’s a windy day or it is icy outside.
