4 simple personal finance tips:

  1. Don’t spend more than you earn each year: If you aren’t making as much money as you would like, or you are spending a lot of money on rent and other major expenses, consider making some changes. In order to avoid serious financial issues (like debt) down the road, make sure that you are never spending more money than you are making.
  2. Try not to carry a balance on your credit card: Whenever you can do so, consider paying off your entire credit card balance. Even though you may only owe a small minimum balance every month, carrying a balance on your card is not ideal. First, you will be charged interest for that amount. Also, racking up a lot of expenses that you cannot yet afford is a quick way to find yourself in long-term credit card debt.
  3. Start saving for retirement as soon as possible: Even if you are just starting your very first full-time job and may not be thinking about your retirement, take advantage of the 401k options at your company. Even contributing a small percentage can help create the foundation for your future savings.
  4. Create a budget, and stick to it! While it can be hard to account for every single expense in a budget, having a good idea of your expenses and income planned out will help you be more aware of your spending habits. This will help you identify areas that you could work on and help you save more money each month.
